George Lucas' six Star Wars Movies to be Realesed in 3D in 2012

Star Wars took place a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away. Now it will now also be in an another dimension: the third.

Thirty five years after he first blew moviegoers minds with his eye-popping space saga, George Lucas is planning to re-release the series yet again, this time in 3D.

Light sabers will swoosh off the screen. Exploding planets will send shrapnel into the wings. Sarlacc tentacles and golden slavegirl bikinis will thrust right into viewers' laps.

Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox have started converting the six Star Was films and will start releasing them - starting with the less-regarded newer trilogy - in 2012.

The original 1977 Star Wars probably won't hit 3D screens until 2015, though the exact timeline hasn't been determined.

"Getting good results on a stereo conversion is a matter of taking the time and getting it right," said John Knoll, the visual effects supervisor for Industrial Light & Magic who is overseeing the project.

"It takes a critical and artistic eye along with an incredible attention to detail to be successful. It is not something that you can rush if you want to expect good results."

Fans can breathe one big sigh of relief: Knoll said there are no plans to add or change any of the effects in the movies.

Lucas' DVD releases and "special edition" re-releases of Star Wars movies have included many new digital effects, added scenes and line changes that were largely panned by fans.

The announcement is a boon to makers of 3D TVs, who have been fearing that the 3D fad is fizzling.
James Cameron is also retrofitting "Titanic," and is planning to release the 3D version in April 2012 to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the luxury liner's sinking.
