‘The Notebook’ coming to Broadway: Nicholas Sparks says musical base on his novel is in works

"The Notebook" will open a new chapter on Broadway.

Romance novelist Nicolas Sparks, who wrote the novel on which the hit 2004 feature film was based, broke the news on CBS's "The Early Show" Friday morning.

Sparks, who was on hand to promote his newest novel, "The Best of Me," revealed that the plot would be revamped as a musical for the New York City stage.

"We're still in development of this process, but the best way that I've always found, and it's what I've done in Hollywood or whether it's working with the publishers that I've worked with for a long time, is to work with people that you really trust who understand what it's about and they want to take that and mold it into something new," Sparks explained of the adaptation process.

When asked who would play the lead roles in the musical, Sparks replied, "Gosh, I don't know! Someone who can sing!"

The film version starred Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, neither of whom broke out in song.

In November, actress Jessica Biel said that "The Notebook" was the "one [film\] I wanted so badly." She explained that she auditioned for the role that McAdams eventually landed but didn't get due to schedule conflicts.

"But there's a million that got away," she explained.

Sparks said that the musical is still a work in progress and no date has been determined for the release of the musical.
