MTV to bring back 'Punk'd': Ashton Kutcher’s celeb prankfest returns in 2012

MTV Monday confirmed months-old speculation that it is bringing back “Punk’d,” the celebrity prank series from Ashton Kutcher.

The network will unveil a sneak peek at the new edition on Dec. 31 at 11 p.m. during its New Year’s Eve special. MTV is also planning on revealing the host that night, too.
“Punk’d” launched in 2003 and ran until 2007.

The series is a take on “Candid Camera.” When it launched big-name stars were set up for elaborate pranks and ultimately Kutcher would step out from a hidden location to let them in on the joke.

Among the highlights of “Punk’d’s” original run were Justin Timberlake crying to his mother after a fake team of federal agents confiscated his home for tax evasion and Wilmer Valderama freaking out after someone smashed his car.

As the show’s popularity grew, it became more difficult to pull off stunts on celebrities without them suspecting they were on the show.

Kutcher and his production teammate Jason Goldberg, are behind the new version as well. MTV did not say whether Kutcher will be on camera this time around.

Besides stunning celebrities, the show also helped launch the careers of “Parent’hood” castmember Dax Shepard and former “Wipeout” co-host Jill Wagner.
The new season of “Punk’d” will air in 2012.
