“Jersey Shore” cast member Vinny Guadagnino sums up very simply why the show became a hit — demographics.
He recalls a recent night when he went from being paid to show up at a Christmas party for a group of youngsters, to visiting a bar for a beer with his friend.
“I’m in a bar with fiftysomething-year-old women, and they’re acting the same way as the little kids were,” he says, laughing. “It’s every single person, it’s every single age group. It’s the old people, they get a kick out of it. The little kids, they just like it because it’s on MTV.”
Guadagnino says he has never seen a show with such “crazy demographics.”
Conversely, viewers haven’t seen a show with such crazy antics. “Jersey Shore” returns for a fifth season Jan. 5 at 10 p.m. The entire crew is back, and they’ve returned to Seaside Heights, N.J., after a one-season sojourn in Italy.
For those who, whatever their demographic, haven’t seen the show, “Jersey Shore” follows a group of twentysomethings sharing in a house at the beach. They work at a T-shirt shop on the boardwalk during the day, and by night they visit the bars.
“I lived it, think I remember it?” Guadagnino jokes.
The new season offers the usual entertainment, he says, and shows new dimensions of the cast members, who include Nicole (Snooki) Polizzi, Paul (Pauly D) DelVecchio, Mike (The Situation) Sorrentino, Jennifer (JWoww) Farley, Ronnie Ortiz-Magro, Sammi Giancola and Deena Cortese.
“It’s not just new drama in the house, you’ll see different sides, too.”
The cast and crew went right from Italy to Jersey. That wore on Guadagnino, who has a moment in the season opener when he questions whether he wants to continue with the show.
“Coming to back to New Jersey, it really got to me,” he says. “Partying isn’t every aspect to my personality. Some people can do it for a year straight. Me, to be mentally healthy, there are a couple things I need.”
