Noel Gallagher, Rihanna Top U.K. Charts
Noel Gallagher's post-Oasis career was given a resounding vote of confidence by British music buyers Sunday (23) when his self-titled album with new group the High Flying Birds, on the Sour Mash label, debuted at No. 1 with sales of 122,000, according to the Official Charts Company. Rihanna's "We Found Love," featuring Calvin Harris, began its third week atop the singles chart.
"Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds" was introduced by two singles last month, "The Death of You and Me," which reached No. 15, and "AKA What A Life!," which peaked at No. 20 and rebounded 55-24 on the new chart. The band played their first official gig last night (Sunday) at Dublin's Olympia Theatre, to be followed by further U.K. dates and then a North American tour from Nov. 5 and European gigs from Nov. 26. The album is released in North America by Mercury/Island Nov. 8.
2010 U.K "X Factor" winner Matt Cardle's "Letters" landed in runner-up spot on the new album chart, well behind Gallagher with 70,000 sales. Its single "Run For Your Life" dipped 6-23. Last week's bestseller, Steps' "The Ultimate Collection," fell to No. 3.
Irish easy listening favorite Daniel O'Donnell's own "Ultimate Collection" became his 14th top ten album as it arrived at No. 7. Maroon 5's "Hands All Over" climbed 23-10, although their single "Moves Like Jagger," featuring Christina Aguilera, ended its nine-week run in the top three (and seven straight weeks at No. 2) by falling to No. 4. Further down the survey, massive coverage of the Stone Roses' reunion announcement helped their eponymous 1989 debut album on Silvertone/Sony Music Entertainment to re-chart at No. 40. "Now! That's What I Call Music 79" started a 12th aggregate week at No. 1 on the compilation chart.
The Rihanna single sold another 92,000 units last week for a three-week total of 286,000. "Fly," the Nicki Minaj single on which she features, climbed back 19-17. Meanwhile British boy band The Wanted debuted at No. 2 with "Lightning" and Charlene Soraia's cover of The Calling's "Wherever Will You Go" climbed 7-3, while the original jumped 25-16.
Kelly Clarkson's "Mr. Know It All" became her seventh U.K. top ten single with a No. 6 debut and widely-hailed New York singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey opened at No. 9 with "Video Games." "Without You" by David Guetta featuring Usher moved 16-10 and "Got 2 Luv U" by Sean Paul featuring Alexis Jordan opened at No. 11.
