Rapper/singer/songwriter/producer Missy Elliot has revealed that she has Graves' disease. Graves is an incurable disorder that affects the thyroid, and was the reason Elliot abruptly disappeared from the music scene for several years.
Elliot says she suffered mood swings, radiation treatments and hair loss; and that the disease caused her to lose her ability to do the simplest tasks--like drive a car or write.
“I was [driving and] trying to put my foot on the brake, but my leg was jumping. I couldn't keep the brake down and almost crashed," Missy told PEOPLE magazine. "I couldn't write because my nervous system was so bad–I couldn't even use a pen.”
Elliot has been feeling better, however. She hasn't had to take her medication for 9 months and she is 30 pounds lighter after beginning an exercise regimen.
