Emma Stone to Play Gwen Stacy in the new Spider Man Film

Well, the rumor mill had it half right.

Reports earlier this week proclaimed that the red-headed "Easy-A" beauty, Emma Stone, had been cast to play Peter Parker's love interest Mary Jane Watson in the planned Spider-Man film set to restart the franchise.

Sony has now confirmed that Stone, who has scored on the big screen with a string of hits such as "Super Bad" and "Zombieland," is indeed joining the cast of the Marc Webb-directed reboot.

Stone, however, is going to play Gwen Stacy, the original love interest of the famed wall crawler, Sony said in a statement. The character was featured in "Spider-Man 3," played by Bryce Dallas Howard.

In the comics, Stacy, the daughter of a police captain, is killed during a battle with the Green Goblin. Her death was controversial at the time among fans because it happened when Spider-Man tried to save her with his webbing, but accidentally snapped her neck from the whiplash.

Stone will join 27-year-old Andrew Garfield, recently seen in "The Social Network," who will play Spider-Man/Peter Parker.

"Andrew and Emma will bring everything audiences expect to these roles, but also make them their own,"

Webb, who helmed "(500) Days of Summer," said in the Sony statement. "Much to my surprise, it was fun to find out that our choice for Gwen (Emma) is also a natural blonde."
